Our History

We have been at the cutting edge of industries for more than a century. Founded in 1914 as an institution specialising in science and technology, we later became a polytechnic and were officially granted university status in 1992. We rebranded and became University of Staffordshire in September 2024. We were established in Stoke-on-Trent, a city in the heart of the UK that’s internationally renowned for ceramics. Our creative and industrial heritage remains a vital part of our identity.

At University of Staffordshire, we are forward-thinking, dynamic and built for the changing way we live, work and study. A gateway to industry and the careers of the future.

We have grown substantially and now also have campuses in Stafford and London. We are home to a global network of more than 20,000 off/on shore students.

Digital is integral to our DNA. We were the first university nationally to launch a computing degree in the 1960s, the first to move to the cloud and the first to introduce an AI-powered digital assistant for students. We have continued to invest in virtual platforms, and digital skills are at the front and centre of our academic strategy.
